PROFILE OF RADIO HUGUKA
1. Presentation of Radio Huguka
Radio Huguka has been initiated by HUGUKA Association in 2010 which is a not-for-profit national organization (Non – Governmental) with the main mission of “Assuring continuous public education in favor of the population living (mostly) in rural areas, through participative communication for rural development”. It constitutes a third communication channel of HUGUKA Association with the aim of forming, informing, educating and entertaining the rural world, including the agricultural producers, community workers and other community development actors. It came up following the Huguka newspaper for Agricultural extension and the Community MultiMedia Centre located in Gikonko, Gisagara District.
Broadcasting on 105.9FM from Jali Mount and the main studio located in Muhanga District, Southern Province, Radio Huguka has a broadcasting content license guaranteed by Media High Council on March 10th, 2011. Since its creation, Radio Huguka offers broadcasting services as a Regional Non Commercial Radio Station.
Radio Huguka is a rural radio for agricultural sensitization/expansion and rural development. It came to reinforce Journal Huguka and enables the rural development actors for them to have an effective tool for agricultural sensitization/expansion and rural development, palliating to the gaps of caused by lack of information and communication channel of agricultural knowledge, skills and techniques. Given the high rates of illiteracy in rural areas, Radio Huguka is a communication tool which helps the population in acquiring new knowledge and exchanges the experiences in the agricultural domain, as well as rural development in general.
Radio Huguka also stimulates the conscience taking among the population, in general, in as far as the various problems facing them are concerned, as well as the available and potential opportunities for problems solving.
Radio Huguka facilitates the integration of rural women in the decision-making process by granting an arena for opinion expression.
2. Missions, Vision, Aims and the Editorial Line
Mission
Radio Huguka’s mission is to form, inform and educate the rural world for self promotion and attainment of sustainable development.
Vision:
Radio Huguka wants to be a Community radio of reference, financially independent, which promotes positive change at all levels, and Which plays an important role at promoting freedom of expression, democracy, local governance, decentralization overall, Unity and reconciliation and the agriculture and rural development supported by a transparent and structured management.
Aims:
On order to attain its mission, Radio Huguka pursues the main aim of supporting and accompaning the rural development process.
In this regard, Radio Huguka is firmly committed to :
• Promote the agricultural activities through the diffusion of the new agricultural technologies ;
• Promote the participative approach among the population for sustainable rural development ;
• Promote exchange experiences, know-how-to-do, and knowledge among populations of the rural world;
• Support the national program aimed at improving public health ;
• Sensitize/Encourage rural population for protection and conservation of the environment ;
• Promote the culture of peace.
Editorial line:
Radio Huguka is a radio of information, formation and debate on the rural world. It is of non-political character and exclusively portrays the Agricultural Extension and rural development.
3. Audience of Radio Huguka
Through its interactive program s, Radio Huguka is followed by more than 3 000 000 of auditors, of whom more than 70% are agricultural producers, agricultural diffusion – extension sensitizing agents and rural development catalysts.
4. The Geographical/territorial coverage of Radio Huguka
Radio Huguka has a coverage of more than 75% of the Rwandese territory owing to the capacity of its transmitters.
